Danny Malone recorded a double-double,
notching 15 points and 11 rebounds, and the Cowboys basketball
team won at South Grand Prairie, 66-49, Tuesday night.
Coppell led by 14 at halftime, but found themselves up just
six midway through the fourth quarter.
“They kind of got it a little close, but we got more
aggressive at breaking their press,” said head coach
Brad Chasteen. “I was proud of the way we finished
and stretched out the lead after they came back a little.”
Chasteen said the Cowboys attempted just one three-point
shot, which was a bit abnormal.
We really took the basketball to the basket and got it inside
a lot,” Chasteen said. Chasteen also thought the team
did a good job defensively of trapping and extending the
defense.
“We held their best player to eight points, and they
had another good perimeter shooter that we did a good job
on.”
Dalton Williams, Conner Vlahos and Jacob Montez all finished
with double figures scoring.
Saturday, Coppell won third place in the Flower Mound Tournament.
Guard Jacob Montez was named to the All-Tournament Team.
“Jacob had a good tournament. We’re pretty small,
but quick. He was able to keep the game moving and speed
the pace up,” Chasteen said. “You’re going
to play well most of the time, if your point guard is playing
so well.
In the third place game Coppell beat Jesuit, 70-53.
It was probably our best game of the year,” Chasteen
said.
Coppell outscored Jesuit, 18-9, in the first quarter. In
the second and third quarter the offense kicked it into
high gear, scoring 50 points in the two quarters, combined.
We were really getting up and down, and had a lot of players
contribute,” Chasteen said.
The Cowboys had 10 different players score. Taylor Goebel
and Davis Chun led the team with 12 points.
In the semi-final round Coppell lost a district preview
game against Flower Mound.
It was the second week in a row against a district opponent,”
Chasteen said. “I didn’t really want to give
away too much, and I don’t think they did either.
We played all 14 players and didn’t really run all
of our plays.”
Chasteen also said he didn’t think the loss was necessarily
bad, because they would have had to play another district
opponent, Flower Mound Marcus, had they won.
Montez led Coppell in scoring with 10 points.
Coppell went 2-0 in pool play qualifying on Thursday.
The Cowboys beat The Colony in the first round, 61-54.
Colin Shaughnessy and Chun led the team with 12 points.
The Cowboys trailed by two at halftime, before taking the
lead in the third quarter and going on to the win.
“I think we had a hangover from the Duncanville game,”
Chasteen said. “We got sky high, had the big home
crowd, playing the best team in the nation. No matter what
happened in that game, it’s tough to come back two
days later with energy.”
Chasteen also said playing the game in the afternoon may
have contributed to the slow start, but that championship
teams have to play in all conditions.
Chris Gibson led The Colony in scoring with 18 points.
We switched around to a zone late and kind of focused on
him (Gibson). When you don’t scout teams it takes
a little longer to figure out what they’re doing,”
Chasteen said.
Following The Colony, Coppell had to come back two hours
later to play Irving Nimitz
“It’s a gut check to step back out and play
two hours later,” Chasteen said. “It’s
an important game because it shows if we have any real true
grit.”
Coppell passed the test, beating Nimitz, 62-47.
The Cowboys grabbed the early lead and never looked back.
They outscored Nimitz, 27-15, in the first half.
I thought we did great,” Chaseteen said. “It’s
not easy to eat a couple oranges and get back out there
and play.”
Connor Vlahos led the team in scoring with 17 points, Chun
added 12.
The Cowboys held Rafael Garcia, one of the top scorers in
the area, to 13 points.
“I thought we did a real good job to hold him down
and used about six different players to guard him,”
Chasteen said.
