South Africa's exceptional
beauty was on display in Tshwane over the weekend. The local
Northern Clivia Club hosted its annual Clivia show to bring
home the reason why two years ago a man was emotionally
compelled to pay R32 000 for a special flower - Clivia -
at an auction held in the capital.
Clivia, which is indigenous only in South Africa and Swaziland,
has become a collectors' item. It attracts buyers from all
over the world, especially collectors from the Far East.
As in all other years, this year's show attracted many local
residents.
Three best flowers were chosen from the breeders who are
all local residents, and the best of them all on display
collected R9 000. Cross pollination was the order of the
day as breeders looked for the top seed and to exchange
with those who have the best.
Peter Lambert of the northern Clivia club says there are
six species in South Africa including the non flowering
Clivia. He says they take five years to flower and have
become financially viable because collectors have realised
that the best are available only in this country.
