LAHORE: As many as 36 houses
have been registered for the annual flower festival scheduled
at Sheeba Park in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) on
25 March.
The annual flower festival has been initiated by the DHA
residents who have well-maintained lawns inside and outside
their homes. The festival is a forerunner of the arrival
of spring. The judges visited various hou
ses on March 20, and registered them for the competition.
The judges observed the quality of the plants, their various
breeds, decoration, installation of fountains, statues and
other decorative motifs in the lawns.
In some houses, people had developed aquariums that had
been fixed on walls, one year prior to the competition.
Muhammad Hamid, an F-Block resident and a greenery lover,
won first prize in the competition last year. He has applied
for this year’s competition. He said that he had bought
flowers from Australia and Casa Blanka for this year’s
competition. The flowers, which he had exhibited in his
lawn, are Renaincolus, Patunia, Benzee, Lilies, Marry Gold,
Gezenia, and Australian Bulbs. He said that he had many
Cactus breeds and also bought a Bonsai from Japan.
He told Daily Times on Thursday that he had inherited plantation
and collection of flowers from his father.
Sonia Zafar, a W block resident, said that she would also
participate in the festival, since she had been preparing
her lawn for the competition for the last year. She was
the runner-up in last year’s competition.
She said that she had made special enclosures for roses,
which included all types of breeds. Some of them were not
available in Pakistan, she added. Wooden, customised stools
and parrots in their cages were also kept in her garden.
Tajammul Hussain, a DHA official, said that that was the
second time the DHA would organise the event. Five schools
would also participate in the festival, he added. He said
that there would be 12 prizes, including cash awards and
shields.
The judges would be Lt Col Sheharyar Saeed, Lt Col (r) Javed
