Dubai: Dubai is in the process
of launching a flower market that will be open to both
individual customers and traders, a top official said.
Dubai
Flower Centre (DFC), the existing logistics base for perishable
goods operating under Dubai Cargo Village, will be turned
into a venue for the flower business.
"It is going to be like a flower shopping centre. People
can come and buy flowers directly from the centre. It will
be for everyone - individuals, retailers and wholesales," Cargo
Village director Ali Al Jallaf told Gulf News.
Opened
more than a year ago, the Dh257 million Dubai Flower Centre
offers office space and warehousing facilities to companies.
Jallaf
said a "flower week" will be held at the centre
either in November or early December as a dry-run before
the flower market's formal launch.
"We want to test the market first," he said.
Cargo Village
facility's total cargo capacity will reach two million
tonnes by the end of this year when the 1.2 million tonne
mega terminal is fully ready.
"We operate part of the mega terminal now. It will be
fully operational by the end of this year," Jallaf said,
adding that Cargo Village will be utilising its full capacity
within one or two years.
Jallaf said Cargo Village will
coordinate with the upcoming international airport and
Dubai Logistics City to see "how
we can work together on expanding the overall cargo capacity
of Dubai."
"We have enough capacity now because Dnata has built a
terminal in the airport free zone," he said.
Dnata, the
ground handling division of Emirates Group, opened the
600,000 tonne annual capacity terminal about three months
back.
