Children at Easebourne Primary
School have been hard at work helping to create a special
corner at the Chichester Cathedral Festival of Flowers.
Their artwork will form part of a display entitled Happy
School Days which is being designed by one of the festival
committee's flower arrangers, Iola Christian.
"This is a wonderful subject and after much thought
and discussion with Hilary Tupperfestival flower designer,
and Lynette Underwood, my co-arranger, we decided a classroom
was in order," said Mrs Christian.
"We chose Easebourne because two of my grandchildren,
now living in Cyprus, were so happy there and were very
definitely taught to enjoy learning by headteacher Arthur
Bain and his staff.
"Our props come from many people, among them the Weald
and Downland museum."
She added: "A saying of Bishop Bell, who was Bishop
of Chichester until his death in l958, was 'happy in their
schools and in their games'.
"I hope that our flowers in this part of the cathedral
will capture these thoughts."
The Happy School Days display will be in front of the Bishop
Storey screen in the Cathedral and hung on the screen will
be eight pieces of artwork from the Easebourne primary school
children.
Mr Bain said: "The pieces show different aspects of
school life and some of the different art techniques that
we regularly use in school.
"Six have been created by classes, one by our pre-school
and one by a mixed-age group who attend our after-school
club."
The artwork includes a flower mosaic using various materials,
colours and textures created by the Early Days Pre-school
children, a 'press print' picture from reception class children
reflecting what makes them happy at school, an Eco Art Attack
of the school logo by children of Year Four.
The Easebourne Owls out-of-hours club created its own owl
and Year Five
children decided sport made most children happy.
So they took digital images of movement in sport and recreated
these in
paint superimposed onto photographic backgrounds.
The seventh Festival of Flowers takes place in Chichester
Cathedral on Thursday to Saturday, May 29, 30 and 31.
The theme of Celebration and Remembrance has been chosen
to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the cathedral and
in remembrance of the life and work of Bishop George Bell,
Bishop of Chichester from 1929 to l958.
