Probably the only example of its kind
in the country, the ground-growing orchid of the species
Dactylorhiza baltica was dug up and taken by a person or
persons unknown.
The unique orchid grew on an island off the southwest coast
and was clearly marked as a protected specimen.
The theft was first noticed by campers in the nature preserve
where it was growing. Authorities have filed for a police
investigation.
The flower probably grew from a seed carry by the wind.
The closest members of its species are found in southern
Estonia and on the Swedish island of Gotland.
The news of its disappearance was first reported by the
newspaper Salon Seudun Sanomat.
