A fire tore through Bert’s Flower
Shop on Old Buckroe Road Sunday morning, and while no one
was hurt, the shop suffered heavy damage.
In the 1950’s a woman in the neighborhood started
the store, which current co-owner Mary Whitehouse visited
as a child.
I can remember it as a child,” she said. “My
family came here. Everybody I knew in the town of Phoebus.”
She and her husband purchased the business, and have run
it since 1985, helping put smiles on many faces.
It’s not just the flowers,” said Mrs. Whitehouse.
“It’s the people that I meet, and we meet a
lot of people.”
The store that connected the Whitehouses to the community
is now reduced to ashes.
The damage estimate is around $30,000. Fire officials believe
the fire was accidental, but have not released an official
cause, saying it is still under investigation.
