Even florists are getting into wagering on the outcome
of the National League Championship Series between the
Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies.
Ken Young of
Phoenix Flowers Shop -- who won a basket of ivy depicting
the famous greens along the outfield of historic Wrigley
Field when the D-backs swept the Chicago Cubs in the division
playoffs -- has a bet with B.J. Dyer and Guenther Vogt
of Bouquets in Denver on the outcome of the Arizona-Colorado
series. Dyer's shop is just a few blocks from Coors Field,
the Rockies' home.
Dyer and Vogt won a bet with a Philadelphia
florist on the Rockies' sweep of the Phillies in the division
playoffs.
"B.J. and Guenther are confident Rockies fans, so after
some serious trash talk, we settled on a unique wager for
the D-backs/Rockies series," said Young. If the D-backs
beat the Rockies in the NLCS, Dyer and Vogt will provide
free flowers to the first 25 D-backs fans who show up in
their Denver flower shop dressed in D-backs' colors. Young
said, in the unlikely event that the Rockies prevail, he
will provide free flowers to Rockies fans who show up at
his main store dressed in their team's colors.
Young partnered
with eight other florists who are members of the Society
of American Florists to represent each of the eight cities
with teams in contention for the World Series title. With
sweeps in the first round, there are now only four florists
remaining in the pool to wager on their team. They are
Phoenix Flower Shops in Phoenix, Bouquets in Denver, Exotic
Flowers in Boston, and Fracci Florist in Cleveland.
Young
said when the D-Backs beat the Rockies and are playing
in the World Series, the florists' wager will increase
and likely test the loser's pride. That's because the loser
will fly to the winner's flower shop and work to create
a grand bouquet of flowers to be delivered to the 2007
World Series Champs offices. "We're located just a few
miles from Chase Field and have already selected a space
at our shop where the American League loser florist can
work" touted Young. |
