Just 24 hours after one of
the warmest days of the year, and the unofficial start to
summer, a frost advisory and a freeze watch are in effect.
Now horticulturists in West Michigan are warning residents
across the region to cover their flowers and vegetables.
Temperatures are expected to dip into the mid-30s tonight,
and that could mean big trouble in the garden.
24 Hour News 8 spoke to Peter Nelson, head grower at Molesta
Floral today. He gives some tips on how to prevent damage
to your precious back yard projects.
* Most vegetables should be covered, with the exception
of kale and cabbage.
* If the temperature dips below 35 degrees, all plants must
be covered.
* Proper coverings include sheets, plastic or even card
board tents. Avoid heavier materials such as tarps, as the
weight could damage plants.
* Bring hanging flower baskets inside.
* Most perennials should be OK with the expected weather.
These plants are hardier than others.
* More tender plants, such as impatiens--which have more
water in the stem--are more susceptible to frost damage.
* When in doubt about the temperature, err on the side of
caution, and cover up!
