PALMER - For the second year
in a row, the Three Rivers Chamber of Commerce has hung
baskets of flowers downtown, creating a colorful gateway
of red, pink and purple into the village.
And this year the initiative was expanded beyond the Main
Street bridge. Flowering baskets also adorn the Bridge Street
bridge.
But officials got a shock today when they discovered that
one already has been stolen - only two days after the 24
baskets were hung.
A basket was stolen from the Main Street bridge, no easy
feat, since they are considerably high off the ground.
Roger R. Duguay Jr. and John L. Sasur Jr., who helped put
up the baskets on Saturday, talked about the theft. They
think it was the work of more than one person.
The baskets are part of a beautification effort by the chamber,
and funded through donations. They cost between $75 and
$100 each. Duguay is on the chamber's board of directors
and Sasur is its vice president.
They hope the culprit returns the basket. Police are investigating,
said Police Chief Robert P. Frydryk.
"We're upset. It just makes the town look so nice,"
Duguay said.
"It's disrespecting the community," Sasur said.
"The chamber is always trying to make this area look
good . . . We just want it back," Duguay said.
It was Sasur's idea last year to do the flower project,
giving the village of Three Rivers its own little "Bridge
of Flowers," like the well-known bridge in Shelburne
Falls.
Sasur, a lifelong Three Rivers resident and its water superintendent,
also installed an irrigation system for the baskets, so
they don't have to be manually watered all the time. |
