Construction began this week
on altering the roadside flowerbeds in Rouse Street as council
workers laying the first initial blocks.
The original flowerbeds erected are being replaced with
a new road feature that consists of core filled blocks and
metal balustrades, similar to those in front of the School
of Arts.
The flowerbeds were initially built as a device to protect
pedestrians from Rouse Street traffic.
Acting General Manager of Tenterfield Shire Council, David
Mitchell, has been overseeing the construction process.
“It’s about the aesthetics, safety provisions
and them being used a rubbish bins,” Mr. Mitchell
said.
“We’re going to replace them with a different
design.”
The new design will consist of core fill block work and
stylish metal vertical post barriers. The council still
believes that it is important to have safety barriers on
the corners of High and Manners Streets for pedestrians.
The reason for the fence is essentially for appearance sake
and pedestrian safety,” Mr. Mitchell said.
It will take six weeks for the Rouse Street/High Street
construction to be completed, with a further two weeks to
finish the Manners Street construction. The timing is dependant
on the delivery of the balustrades.
The council hopes that this alteration to the flowerboxes
will prevent people jumping on the flowerboxes and them
being used a rubbish bins.
