Flower Mound, Marcus come up short at Max Goldsmith Relays

Lewisville’s boys and girls track teams proved too much for Flower Mound and Marcus Friday at the Max Goldsmith Relays.

The Farmers swept both titles at the meet run on their home track. Lewisville’s boys scored 193 points to outdistance second place North Mesquite (137 points). Flower Mound placed third (89), and Marcus was fourth (68).

Lewisville tallied 160 points to win the girls title. Marcus finished second with 137 points, and Flower Mound was seventh (30).

“I thought we competed well,” said Flower Mound coach Andrew Cook. “We had some solid performances for so early in the year.”

Cook was especially pleased with Perry Watson’s day. Earlier in the week, Cook began the conversion of Watson, a high jumper and relay teamer, into a hurdler.

Running the 300-meter hurdles for the first time against competition, Watson placed third in a time 40.9 seconds. Watson also placed second in the high jump clearing 5-feet, 10 inches. “We hadn’t been running anyone in the 300 hurdles,” Cook said. “Kenny was actually pretty excited about the chance.”

In the girls 100 hurdles, Flower Mound’s Alison Hart broke the school record on the way to a second-place finish in a time of 15.1. Teammate, Melody Criswell won the high jump clearing a height, 5-4.

Marcus set meet records in three distance races. Craig Lutz won the 1,600 (4:21.30) and 3,200 (9:20.60) in meet record times. Alyssa Dooley took first in the 1,600 (5:16.10) to set a meet record. Dooley also won the 800 (2:21.7). Marcus’ Rachel Oleksiak placed second in the 3,200 (12:11.8).

Marcus senior Elizabeth Dean continued her dominance in the discus and shot put, winning both events. Dean got off a throw of 128-4 to win the discus, and had a throw of 38-4 in the shot put.

Marcus’ Adriene Easley won the long jump with a leap of 17.6.5. Teammate Rachel Apfel won the triple jump (37-feet). In the pole vault, Marcus’ Teresa Nguyen and Morgan Van Wagoner each cleared 10-feet to finish second and third respectively.

In the relays, Marcus placed second in the 400 relay (49.4) and third in the 1,600 (4:12.7).

Friday, Flower Mound’s boys squad scored big points in the relays as the Jaguars placed second in the 1,600 relay (3:27) and third in the 800 relay (1:30.8). Josh Smith won the 400 in time of 50.4 and finished second in the 800 (1:58.1).

Flower Mound sophomore Connor Adams was second in the 1,600 (4:26), and Matt Gwartney placed third in the 200 (22.5).

Marcus fared well in the field events. Chase Douglas won the shot put with a toss of 52-9. Tyler Stowell finished second in the shot put (48.25) and discus (151-9). Daniel Leonard placed third in the pole vault (12-6).\

Saturday at the Dallas Jesuit Relays, Flower Mound Jack Spinks cleared 6-feet, 8-inches to win the event.

Flower Mound and Marcus return to action on March 29 at the Ken Harrell-Jaguars Relays.
