Visitors to Sykesville have
two choices this weekend to celebrate spring and find a
gift or two – for themselves or someone else.
The eighth annual Flower and Artisans festival returns
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday along Sykesville’s
Main Street. The Sykesville Business Association in cooperation
with the Town of Sykesville sponsors the rain or shine event.
Also returning this year is Piney Run Park’s 16th
annual Herb Festival. The festival will be held from 11
a.m. to 4 p.m. at the park, 30 Martz Road, Sykesville. No
pets are allowed and regular entrance fees apply.
The Main Street event helps people get into planting season
and to also pick out some gifts for Mother’s Day from
the Main Street businesses and the more than 20 vendors
and artists that will be on hand, said Charlie Taylor, event
organizer.
Vendors at the Flower Fest will be selling hanging baskets,
flowers, vegetables, crafts, jewelry, Beijo bags and more,
Taylor said. On Mane Street Beauty Salon, 7552 Main St.
will offer American Cancer Society Relay for Life crafts
and hair braids and designs and other vendors will help
raise money for the society, she said.
Festival goers will also get a chance to meet Robyn Zumbrun
and Lisa Meyer of Baltimore, the owners of Sykesville’s
newest Main Street business, Sweet Simplici Tea, which will
be located at 7520 Main St., Suite 102, Sykesville, in the
former Manna Café Tea Room. Sweet Simplici Tea will
have sample tea, cookies, chocolates and gift baskets for
sale.
The Flower Fest also includes activities for the children,
including a free craft for children to make a flower for
their mothers, Taylor said. Also children will get a chance
to have their faces painted or get balloon creations from
hometown clown Silly Willy.
St. Paul’s United Methodist Church will host a flea
market and bake sale in the church’s social hall,
7538 Main St. The flea market features donated items and
proceeds will go toward a mission of the United Methodist
women’s choice.
Faith Lutheran Church will give away seeds in time for
the planting season.
Music will also be playing courtesy of D.J. Jerry Thrasher
and he will take requests, Taylor said.
Most businesses will be open and restaurants E.W. Becks’
Restaurant and Pub and Baldwin’s Station will have
specials, she said.
Piney Run’s Herb Festival will feature about 25 vendors
selling flowers, herbs, art, jewelry, honey and more from
local vendors, said Maxine Bukowitz of Marriottsville, a
volunteer at the park.
The event includes music throughout the day by the River
Rhythm Ramblers, dancing by Rock Candy Cloggers at 12:45
p.m. and the annual Maypole Dance at 2 p.m. The nature center
will also be open from 1 to 5 p.m.
This is Bukowitz’s first year helping with the event,
but she has attended for 10 years. She sees the event as
a great kickoff to spring and loves the small town feel
of the activities.
‘‘When you have the maypole and see the kids,
it’s a wonderful hometown activity,” she said.
Tea parties led by former park naturalist Elaine Sweitzer
will be available for children who can explore the woods
and hunt for fairy treasure, Bukowitz said. Tea parties
will have a forest and fairyland theme and include costumes
for children and they will get a chance to make benches
out of logs. The party costs $3 and will be at 11 a.m.,
1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Games and some crafts have a nominal charge.
A puppet show will take place at noon and at 1 p.m. in
the nature center, she added. Carroll County Public Libraries
will also present storytelling at 2:15 and 3 p.m. at the
amphitheater.
Also on hand will be the Birds of Prey display, the Westminster
Astronomy Club and a fairy treasure hunt, where children
will have to find Kerridwyn the Fairie to star their journey. |
