Flower show is beautiful and bold

"When something catches your eye, it's either because you like it or it shouldn't be there" said Monica Nilsson, as she walked from one exhibit to the other on opening day at the Venice Area Garden Club flower show.

Nilsson found plenty to admire during the "Bold and Beautiful" Golden Jubilee Standard Flower Show on Nov. 14 at the Venice Art Center. The show was also a celebration of the VAGC's 50th anniversary.

"Almost everywhere you look there is another beautiful setting to see, the next even better than the one before," Virginia Cook said.

Earlier in the day, judges evaluated each entry before the show opened. The comment cards also helped the viewer understand some of the expectations of an exhibit.

Sue Traca, a silk flower designer and first time visitor, said she did not know what to expect, but was impressed with the show.

For Emil W. Heid, reading the comment cards, "made things very interesting, made you take a second look at the exhibits."

The highlight of the show, for the 109 members, was the awards reception .

"This is a very large show for us, 48 floral entries and 155 horticultural entries," event chairwoman Sandra Walters said. "A lot of time and effort went into the preparation and presentation."

National awards, for those exhibits scoring 95 or better, were presented in the following categories:

Designers Choice: Susan DiNapoli and Chris Dermody; Petite: Rosario Fredrickson; Table Artistry: Susan DiNapoli; Horticulture Excellence: Susan DiNapoli; Education: Siegrid Cook for her bald eagle exhibit; Artistic Craft: Maxine Ginn for her necklace made of natural plant material, and the Horticulture Sweepstakes Award, for the most blue ribbons, went to Naida Atkins.

"We have had a lot of positive feedback from the show," Walters said. "People have come from all over to see our show. I hope it encourages area people to become involved with gardening and especially our club."
