Bright colors,
Latin rhythm: The lush displays at the "Floranova"
flower show at Macy's State Street Store, 111 N. State St.,
through March 30 are a fantasy of leaves and flowers. Hydrangeas
and daffodils with sword ferns, kangaroo paws and orchids.
Look closely and you'll see quite a few common houseplants
in the spectacular arrangements: pothos, sanseviera, ponytail
palm, croton and anthurium, for example. Among the combinations
we enjoyed most were the many varied bromeliads, with their
rosettes of stiff, shiny, often gorgeously colored leaves,
adorned here and there with tucked-in tillandsias —
little puffs of spiky leaves that can live right in the
air. Both are offbeat but perfectly possible houseplants.
