Even before the doors to
the Polo Women’s Club 80th Anniversary Flower Show
opened, a crowd have already queued up outside the door
of the Polo Town Hall.
Inside, finishing touches including the awarding of ribbons
was being completed.
“I found it difficult to judge the entries this year,”
said Master Gardener Alice Cassens, a judge for the show.
“There are great arrangements and good-looking flowers
everywhere.”
One quality she looked for in a winning entry was the overall
appearance of the flower.
“I also look at the back of the flower,” said
Cassens. “The whole flower needs to look clean.”
At noon the doors opened and the anniversary flower show
was in full bloom.
A couple younsters ran over to see their entries on display
at the show.
Chandler Shipman said she spent a month preparing.
Honoring the history of the garden club was one aspect of
this year’s show.
“It is our club’s 80th anniversary,” said
Polo Women’s Garden Club president Jean Dawson. “We
looked at the history of the club when we decided to have
a show. When the club started they had a spring and a fall
show.”
One part of the show that stayed the same was the entrance
fee.
“They charged a dime so we followed in their footsteps,”
she said.
Dawson was proud of all the hard work put in by the club
and participants.
“It is hard but fun looking at what we have,”
she said. “We are hoping for a good turnout today.”
Her wish came true with the estimated 200 people who attended.
