However, what also makes me
sad is the fact that so many Scottish people have adopted
the English name for this lovely flower whose numbers are
such a spectacle at this time of year. I learned the names
of wild flowers from my mother 60 years ago and she was
in no doubt that the carpets of blue flowers were wild hyacinths,
the Scottish name, and bluebells appeared later in the summer
and were called harebells by
folk south of the Border. Please can we
keep our Scottish names alive? |
