The pint-sized gardener -
who entered a number of flowers and plants, including a
butterfly bush, a zinnia and a peacock orchid - earned both
the Youth Merit Award and the Youth Sweepstakes Award Saturday
afternoon.
Although this is the first time the Fulton Garden Club had
a separate youth category, this is the second year Sands
has participated in the show. She said attending in 2007
inspired her to work even harder this year.
“I really enjoyed it and I saw all the pretty flowers,”
she said. “I came again this year because I like to
look at all the flowers and see what things I got.”
Sands said she enjoys gardening because “I think flowers
are really pretty and I like to water them and get muddy.”
Ten-year-old Jonah Wilson also returned to the flower show
after a strong showing in 2007.
“I thought I could get another honorable mention,”
said Wilson, who took home a blue and a red ribbon for his
entries of a marigold and a black sunflower. “I like
how you get ribbons.”
