Get your flower power in NYC

Well you don't have to imagine anymore.

Eyewitness News reporter Lauren Glassberg has the story.

There are many people who believe in the healing power of herbs and the potions you can make from them. And there's a Manhattan store where you can find many of those herbs, and they all come from American organic farms.

A little cava. How about some prickly ash? Maybe a little sassafras. And throw in some bee's wax, for good measure. Mix it all together, and you've got an apothecary right out of a Harry Potter book.

But Flower Power happens to be located in the East Village.

Latta Chettri Kennedy is an herbalist, and she there's a remedy for just about anything. She used lemon balm after she had her baby.

"I was a bit post partum, and this got rid of part partum depression in two days," she said.

How about marshmallow?

"You use it if you have scalding urine, like a urinary tract infection," she said. "And it's very, very soothing and it doesn't taste bad."

Then there's damiana, the latin name is turnera aphrodesiaca. Can you guess what that's about? It's love potion No. 9.

The herbs are organic and many are used for teas. But you can also opt for tinctures, or extracts. Some customers swear by their herbs.

"I like the idea of using something more natural," customer Jacob Krueger said. "Something that comes from the earth, and I'm from the earth. So there's this whole earth thing happening."

Even if it means drinking tea of mugwort.

"It does sound like a very mystical," customer Tim Karu said. "But once you get past some of the simple naming conventions and start listening to the list of people who have been using the stuff for thousands of years, it all just starts to sound the same as Tylenol and Advil."

And if you are totally clueless about what herbs you might want to take for whatever reason, the staff at Flower Power Herbs and Roots will guide you along.
