For more than 78 years, Sherman's Family
Flower Shop stuck with Walnut Hills. And people there did
the same.
But now the florist, which became the choice of
many people throughout the city, has closed.
An appreciation
dinner is being planned for owner Archie Sherman Jr., whose
father, Archie Sherman Sr., founded the business in 1928.
Friends
of Sherman Jr. will host a celebration from 3 to 7 p.m.
Sept. 23 at New Vision United Methodist Church, Bond Hill.
"To have managed to stay in business for 78 years is a
tribute to the Sherman family for their professionalism
and business acumen," photographer C. Smith, one of the
organizers of the event, said. "It is also a tribute to
the black community who made Sherman's their florist of
choice. We want this day to be special because praise and
recognition are certainly long overdue."
Sherman Jr., an
advocate of human rights and community empowerment, has
won numerous awards, including Businessman of the Year
given by the the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber of Commerce.
He
and his wife, Jeanne Carroll Waugh Sherman, are parents
of three children.
