From Rodgers and Hammerstein to Phil
Collins: The American Musical Theatre of San Jose will stage
two musicals featuring a book by Tony winner David Henry
Hwang as part of its 2008-2009 season.
The season will kick off with David Yazbeck's The Full Monty
Sept. 16. Nominated for nine Tony Awards for its 2000 Broadway
debut, The Full Monty features a book by Tony-winning playwright
Terrence McNally, with music and lyrics by Yazbeck. The
heartfelt musical about unemployed male steel workers turned
strippers will run through Sept. 28.
Two musicals featuring books by David Henry Hwang will be
presented back to back. First up is the South Bay premiere
of Hwang's revision of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical
Flower Drum Song. Hwang was Tony-nominated for his 2002
adaptation of the classic musical about Chinese immigrants
in 1950's San Francisco. Flower Drum Song will run Oct.
28-Nov. 9.
Following Flower Drum Song will be a new production of the
Disney musical Tarzan directed by Tony nominee Lynne Taylor-Corbett.
A co-production with Theatre of the Stars in Atlanta, Dallas
Summer Musicals and The North Carolina Theatre in Raleigh,
Tarzan features a book by Hwang — based on both the
Disney film and the original Edgar Rice Burroughs story
"Tarzan of the Apes" – and a score by Phil
Collins that includes the Academy Award-winning song "You'll
Be in My Heart."
Currently assembled for the newly revised Tarzan mini-tour
are scenic designer Kenneth Foy, aerial designer Paul Rubin
and lighting designer Ken Billington. Tarzan will run Feb.
10-22, 2009.
The season will conclude with the Broadway classic 42nd
Street, which will play American Musical Theatre of San
Jose April 14-26, 2009. With a score by Harry Warren, lyrics
by Al Dubin and a book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble,
42nd Street won the 1981 Tony Award for Best Musical and
the 2001 Tony Award for Best Revival.
