“New challenges are
emerging for India’s growing floriculture industry.
Even as the domestic demand for flowers is growing annually
by 15-20 per cent in major cities, the export growth has
struck a bumpy path,” said S Jafar Naqvi, president,
iFlora and chief co-coordinator, Flora Expo 2008, while
talking with media persons today.
In the city to promote the forthcoming expo, which is being
organised in New Delhi from September 26 to 28, Naqvi said
the latest export trends available from the Directorate
General of Foreign Trade under the Commerce Ministry show
that floriculture export in 2007-08 was $ 83.67 million.
“It is not a small achievement that India’s
domestic flower and plant market, now valued at over Rs
1,000 crore is further expected to grow to Rs 10,000 crore
in the future,” he said.
The International Flora Expo 2008, along with third International
Landscape and Gardening Expo 2008 and International Florist
and Floral Art Expo 2008, is the third such expo to be held.
