The Hub
City Garden Club's flower show, "Glory, Glory, Glory!"
which was held at the Hattiesburg Cultural Center on April
30, was a huge success again this year.
Beautiful flowers and plants filled the entire main floor
of the Cultural Center.Visitors were invited to view the
floral designs and horticultural specimens that had been
judged earlier in the day by seven National Garden Club
judges who had traveled to Hattiesburg from various cities
around Mississippi.
Elaine Eure, chairwoman for the event, said this year's
attendance was the best ever.Almost every seat was filled
for both of the seminars presented in the afternoon.
Sharon Steel, Hub City Garden Club member, presented an
excellent seminar on indoor and outdoor bonsai trees and
shrubs. She spoke about the history of bonsai and provided
valuable information on their care.It was interesting to
learn that when properly cared for, bonsai trees and shrubs
will live for hundreds of years.
Sharon explained that in China and Japan, the bonsai trees
and shrubs are passed down from generation to generation,
and they are considered the most treasured possession a
person can inherit from his or her family.
Nichole Bush, owner of Blooms and Bushes and instructor
of landscape construction at Jones Community Junior College,
inspired everyone who attended her seminar to try container
gardening.
Nichole demonstrated how easy it is to fill hanging baskets
and flower pots with combinations of plants and flowers
to make our patios, porches, and decks more colorful and
beautiful.
Judges awarded first place ribbons to the following participants
in the flower show for their floral designs: Elisabeth Jumper,
Thelma Deal, Sandra Bender, Elaine Eure, Marty DeBolt and
Donna Smith.Elaine Eure also received a special Tricolor
Award for her design.
In the Horticultural Division of the show, judges gave special
Awards of Merit to Mary Lou Poole for her rose, Linda McWilliams
for her kangaroo paw fern, Sue Pace for her Louisiana iris,
Elaine Walz for her rosemary, and Dimple Campbell for her
gerbera daisy. Dimple's gerbera daisy also received the
Award of Horticultural Excellence. Her exquisite laceleaf
Japanese maple received the Arboreal Award.
Visitors to the show were asked to vote for their favorite
entries in each division. The Viewer's Choice Awards went
to Elisabeth Jumper for her beautiful floral design of seven
orange gerbera daisies, and to Maxine Dement for the gorgeous
white calla lily she grew in her yard. |
