WINCHESTER
Cathedral is to revive a long tradition to mark the life
of the last English king to be executed.
The Rev Canon Michael St John-Channell has reintroduced
a ceremony on the anniversary of the beheading of Charles
I.
On January 30 a scholar from Winchester College will place
a floral tribute near the statue of King Charles I at the
west end of the cathedral on the anniversary. Prayers will
be said and the choir of Charterhouse School will sing evensong
at 5.30pm including an anthem to mark the occasion.
Mr St John-Channell, the cathedral precentor and sacrist,
said: "Charles I made significant mistakes and many
wrong choices in his reign. His own beliefs in monarchy
most people would now find unacceptable. Yet shortly after
his cruel death many looked upon him as a saint.
"His dignified and faithful life were in sharp contrast
to that of those before and after him
"He loved and defended the Church of England against
those who would have destroyed it.
