Sandy Landuyt
has 27 years of experience in the floral industry, but the
January opening of Sandy’s Floral Gallery marked the
first time she was the boss.
Her shop at 14 W. Main St. succeeds the Village Green Florist
that operated at the same location in the Peirce Block of
19th century buildings, directly across from Warfield’s
Restaurant. Before opening, Landuyt worked as a floral designer
at Sinicropi Florist and Gift Shop in Seneca Falls and Lake
Country Florists in Geneva.
“My personal specialty is weddings,” says Landuyt
adding, “But we do it all,” a reference to flowers
for funerals, anniversaries, birthdays and other special
occasions.
Turning the pages of her large photo album, she describes
past wedding arrangements. Typically, she says wedding flowers
range in price from $1,000 to $1,500. Some call for combining
unconventional materials in a unique manner.
“Most people bring in a picture,” she said.
For a wedding at Belhurst Castle in Geneva, she cut four
tree branches to form a traditional huppa, or a canopy-style
enclosure for a Jewish ceremony. The canopy is a symbol
representing the new home that the bride and groom will
build together. Over the top of the branches Landuyt laid
fabric as a symbol of security and protection.
Landuyt, a native of Seneca Falls, studied at the horticulture
department at BOCES in Flint, then attended Morrisville
College, and later trained in floral design at Hixson School
of Floral Design in Cleveland, Ohio. Along the way, she
married a graduate of Midlakes, and the couple raised three
sons. They now live in Seneca Castle. She keeps up with
the changing times by going to flower shows and reading
bride magazines.
