The laws protecting the future of the
Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show will be introduced
into State Parliament this week.
Environment Minister Gavin Jennings said that independent
reports showed the event did not have a significant impact
on trees and plants or the health of the gardens.
The Government stepped in to save the event last year after
negotiations between the event organisers and the City of
Melbourne broke down.
The Government would not allow major events to be threatened
by people pushing their own agendas, Tourism Minister Tim
Holding said.
There were some councillors who were trying to have the
show moved from the historic location and were making wrong
claims of environmental damage, he said.
"This is a very important event on Victoria's calendar,
boosting our economy by approximately $8 million each year.
"Its continuation in the future is certainly a win
for Melbourne."
