The annual Naivasha horticultural
fair opens on Friday amid complaints by flower farms of
high taxation and costly farm inputs.
The show has attracted 120 exhibitors.
Vice-chairman Richard McGonnell said exhibitors from Malawi,
Zambia and Rwanda had joined the fair.
McGonnell, however, expressed concern over the increase
in farm inputs, which had adversely affected the sector.
"The taxes are going up by the day and the high prices
of fertiliser have made farming expensive coupled with international
competition," he added.
He added that post-election violence had negatively affected
the sector.
The two-day fair will be held at the Naivasha Golf club.
Amiran Kenya head of agro-division Yariv Kedar attributed
the high fertiliser prices to the soaring oil prices.
Meanwhile the Kenya Flower Council (KFC) holds an annual
general meeting today.
KFC Chief Executive Officer Jane Ngige said the meeting
would discuss outstanding horticulture policies and make
proposals to the Government.
She said the lack of a policy had hurt the industry in the
past.
