This charming little cormous
perennial hails from open grasslands and hillsides in South
Africa. It features pleated, often lightly hairy, lance-shaped
mid-green leaves. Starting in early spring, 1-inch, cup-shaped
purple or lavender flowers are borne on open spikes. The
sometimes fragrant blooms open successively from the lowest
bud upward, allowing for a bloom period of well over six
weeks.
Grow in fertile, well-drained loam or sandy soil in sunny,
airy locations. Babianas appreciate a dry season after blooming
so either grow them in pots that can be set aside or avoid
watering during the summer. Resume watering in the fall.
They are perfect for rock gardens or mixed with other spring-blooming
bulbs. Plant in stands for maximum visual appeal. Babianas
are drought tolerant and they vary in hardiness, but probably
will not like anything below 25 degrees.
