Plant and flower festival
celebrates the colors of autumn
The Pee Dee State Farmers Market offers up the best of the
fall season with this year’s Fall Plant and Flower
Festival, bringing new colors to the garden with an array
of beautiful plants and flowers
According to Commissioner Hugh Weathers, the ideal period
for fall planting is roughly six weeks before the first
hard frost. Fall is definitely the time to plant cool season
veggies, perennials, evergreens, deciduous trees and shrubs.
During the three-day festival, vendors will be on hand with
all of these products plus many garden favorites such as
hardy pansies, snap dragons, mums, ornamental cabbage, pumpkins
and other decorative items.
Jackie Moore, festival coordinator, said, “Do your
garden a favor! Try fall planting. It’s the best time
for plants. The roots have all winter to grow without having
to use energy to generate growth above the soil. It’s
also easier on the gardener to plant in the fall when the
temperature is cooler and the soil is less dense.”
Shoppers should bring a wagon or cart to make shopping easier.
Facilities are handicap accessible.
In addition to the fresh, healthy produce available under
the big Farmers Shed, a variety of food vendors will have
other treats and goodies to satisfy hungry appetites.
