Flowers aren't only for special occasions
at the Ruby Room. This "spa for the spirit" incorporates
the power of flowers in most services. Facials, massages
and yoga include spritzes of flower essence spray, which
are center stage in the spa "Flower & Gem Essence
Journey."
Laryl Fett is an Intuitive energy healer who provides the
essence journey at Ruby Room. She has almost 30 years experience
as an essence practitioner and maker.
"Flower essences have a different effect than aromatherapy,"
she says. "Traditional aromatherapy uses the pure essential
oil of a plant," while essential oils are made from
pressing the plant's flowers.
Aromatherapy is effective due to the aroma's impact on the
brain receptors, she says, and due to people's memory or
cultural associations with the flower or its aroma.
Flower essences are designed to impact one's energy. Just
as we have energy, so do plants. Flower essences capture
the flowers' energy.
"A flower essence is the aura or energy imprint of
a flower in liquid," she says.
To make flower essences, flowers are picked when they're
at their prime and their life force is most vibrant, and
they are preserved, usually in vinegar or alcohol.
A flower essence alone has little or no scent, Fett says.
Essential oils may be added to make a product that offers
both aroma and essence therapeutic values. The essence sprays
used at Ruby Room include essential oils.
The essence journey includes an exploration of the customer's
aura to help select the flower essences that would suit
the customer's needs.
Here's what happens during the flower portion of the Ruby
Room essence journey:
* The spa has a computer that reads auras. The customer
puts a hand on a plate, and the computer screen shows the
customer's aura colors, represented around a silhouette
from shoulders up.
* The intuitive energy healer points out colors of the aura
and explains what they represent. The two talk about flower
essences, and choose one to try. The energy healer spritzes
the customer's aura with the select essence spray.
* They recheck the aura on the computer, noting what has
changed since the spray, thus representing the effects the
flower essence has on the customer's energy.
* They discuss the customer's life and needs, and determine
one or two floral essences that are best for the customer.
* Part of determining the right floral essences for an individual
includes the use of kinesiology. It's a science to test
muscle strength in response to energy input.
The intuitive energy healer has the customer extend an arm
and applies pressure to test muscle strength in response
to particular essences.
The entire procedure, including the gem exploration, takes
a half hour. The cost is $65 and includes one 4-ounce flower
essence spray.
Ruby Room has flower essence sprays available for sale in
the second floor boutique. This spa is located at 1743-5
W. Division St. It has a full-service styling salon, massage

Using organic plants is the best way to tap into plants'
powers, Fett says. Otherwise, the pesticides and fungicides
used on non-organic plants are transferred to us as we touch
and smell them, and are absorbed into the products to which
the flowers are made.
For more ways to use Fett suggests adding fresh or dried
flowers to baths. Try lavender flowers with a splash of
lavender water, or add rose petals with a splash of rose
water. You can also try jasmine or gardenia flowers with
a splash of orange water.
For an elegant brunch, take 1 1/2 cups of your favorite
honey and 1/8 to 1/4 cup chopped lavender flowers. Cook
the mixture over low heat for an hour, strain, and spread
on toast. Delicious
