Though it may seem a bit overwhelming
to the uninitiated, the Los Angeles Flower District is easily
navigated once you know where you're going and how to get
there. For regulars, the bustling mart is one of Downtown's
best resources, where normally pricey blooms can be had
for a steal. The colorful heart is located between Maple,
San Julian, Seventh and Eighth streets, with several smaller
shops surrounding the two main buildings.
Valentine's is one of the district's busiest times of year,
when retail florists from across the city flock to the district
in the wee hours of the morning to fill trucks full of fresh
flowers to take back to their shops.
The market trades six days a week and is closed on Sunday.
Entrance for the public is $2 on weekdays and $1 on Saturday.
Those up for a little adventure and willing to brave the
crowds clamoring for all manner of Valentine's Day flowers
will be rewarded with significant deals on everything from
roses and orchids to zinnias and carnations.
Though some stalls accept credit cards, most deal in cash
(it also makes bartering easier). If you truly want to make
your floral gift from scratch, a few vendors sell vases
and other decorative objects.
Of course, there are plenty of pre-made bouquets and arrangements
for sale, though you'll often find better deals on these
at the independent street-front shops surrounding the mart.
