STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Florists
and garden centers will decorate St. Paul's Episcopal Memorial
Church, Stapleton, for its 10th annual British Flower Festival
Friday, Oct. 3 through Sunday, Oct. 5. The festival will
include a gala opening cocktail reception Friday at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $60 each. Saturday will include both a blessing
of the animals at 1 p.m. and a "Trash or Treasure"
appraisal at 2 p.m. for $10 each. The festival will close
on Sunday with a concert and traditional English tea at
3 p.m. Tickets are $30 each. For information and tickets

The opening night gala will feature cocktails, hors d'oeuvres
and music by the Nancy Yourke Trio. Community leaders from
the fields of education, community service, public life
and the arts and humanities will be honored for their "significant
contributions to the life of the Staten Island community.
They are: Colette Caesar of Graniteville, an assistant principal
at Long Island City High School in Queens; Judith McMahon,
Acting State Supreme Court Justice; Michael McMahon, city
councilman; Wayne Saunders of Meiers Corners, a postal worker
in Manhattan and the program director of the parish feeding
ministry; Gladys Schweiger, executive director of Alzheimer's
Foundation of Staten Island; Edith Susskind of Silver Lake,
an Advance Woman of Achievement, community activist and
gift specialist; Matthew Titone, state assemblyman; Meg
Ventrudo, executive director of the Jacques Marchais Museum
of Tibetan Art; the late Karen Woytowich, former director
1st District Federated Garden Club N.Y.S. and longtime participant
in the flower show.
Saturday's blessing of the animals will take place on the
Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals.
A donation will be made to the Staten Island Council on
Animals, a rescue and care group. At the Trash or Treasure
program, George Way, noted antique expert, will value participants'
possessions brought in from garages and attics.
Garden and floral experts will be available to answer questions
about their displays of herbs, orchids and roses.
On Sunday, a concert in the church of American and British
music performed by the Viva Voce Chamber Ensemble will be
followed by a formal English tea in the garden where the
Lila Barbes Award for excellence in flower design will be
presented. Ms. Barbes is a lifelong member of the parish
and a distinguished garden club member.
Chairwomen are Patricia Norton Gabbett of West Brighton
and Constance Bowden Lane of Emerson Hill.
