Taylorsville Florist and Gifts held its
third Pink Lemonade Party, Thursday, Oct. 11 from 2 - 6
p.m. The special event promoted breast cancer awareness
and raised funds for the American Cancer Society.
“This is something we can do to make people aware
of early detection and survival,” Connie Ware, co-owner
of the business and breast cancer survivor. Ware is a third
generation breast cancer survivor. Her mother and business
partner, Anna Jean Smith is also a survivor. The business
opened in 1957 by Smith’s mother, Lottie Butler.
Ware’s daughter, Karen also helps with the business.
The
American Cancer Society, Ellisville State School’s
Early Invention Program, Mississippi Department of Health’s
First Steps, Deaconess Home Health and Magee Hospital had
representatives on hand to give out information during
the health fair.
Jackson oncologist, Dr. Gerry Ann Houston
was in attendance to answer questions and provided additional
information about breast cancer.
“Earlier this month the town held a proclamation
signing recognizing October as Breast Cancer Awareness
Month in Taylorsville,” Ware said.
The event featured
a sidewalk dessert cafe with numerous homemade desserts
donated by friends in the community and fresh lemonade.
With
a small donation guests were able to enjoy a dessert with
lemonade and sit at the brightly decorated tables with
vases of fresh pink roses.
Show choirs and individuals from
Taylorsville High School and West Jones High School provided
the entertainment.
The event also featured a raffle with
items donated by vendors and local merchants. In participation
with October being recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness
Month, proceeds from the raffle will support breast cancer
awareness. |
