For gardeners, the presence
of flower boxes hanging from the windows is a source of
pleasure that is constantly renewed throughout the summer
months. You can play with colour harmonies or contrasting
plants and even dare to introduce some vegetables. And why
not? After all, flower boxes offer you a marvellous opportunity
to add a touch of originality to the garden. What’s
more, if you’re not happy with the results, you can
easily change the chosen arrangements without it costing
a fortune.
For this type of gardening to succeed and to ensure that
the plants stay healthy, you always have to think about
watering, feeding, treating and pruning. These are the keys
to success. For example, it is important to deadhead faded
flowers regularly to achieve prolonged and abundant flowering.
Do you realize that during heat waves, your plants may need
to be watered as often as twice a day? As well, if you have
to go away for a few days, rely on a friend or neighbour
to do the watering for you. Remember also, that plants in
containers need to be fed on a regular basis. Fertilize
them with a plant food once a week. Or, at the beginning
of the summer, add a slow dissolving fertilizer that has
the advantage of feeding the plants over several weeks.
