PALATKA, FL
-- The Ten Commandments are listed on a large cement sign
in front of the St. Monica's Catholic Chuch in Palatka.
Number seven says "You Shall Not Steal" but it
didn't stop thieves from taking off with flowers from the
front of the church.
For the fifth time in five months, someone has stolen the
freshly planted flowers from the front of the church, located
in the historic district of Palatka.
The most recent theft happened Wednesday.
The church had just planted 16 small plants but by Wednesday
morning, the flowers were gone.
"It's outrageous that anyone would steal from a church,"
said church member Alfred Mastrogiuseppe.
Each time the flowers are stolen, it costs the church about
$60 to plant more.
Church officials say police have arrested one man who was
caught riding his bike with the flowers in his basket. But
they're not sure if he is responsible for the other thefts.
Police have also increased patrols in the area.
Church officials are now debating whether to plant more
flowers again.
"It's just sad that stuff like that has to happen --
especially at church," said church employee Ernie Poupore.
