MEAN-SPIRITED thieves have tarnished efforts to brighten up two Middlesbrough streets.
Residents of Falkland Street and Kildare Street spruced up their neighbourhood for the festive season by planting more than 100 flower tubs.
But within days of the tubs being placed, four of them were stolen.
It is believed the thieves used a vehicle as the plant pots are heavy.
Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator Jean Bedford said residents were upset by the thefts.
Jean said: “Has the Christmas spirit died in the Boro?
“They were only there for four days.
“They must have had a van. They couldn’t possibly carry them, they are so heavy.
“It is just so disappointing.
“We live in a concrete world, we are just trying to bring some colour to the streets.”
Jean hopes to prick the conscience of whoever took them.
The tubs were planted by volunteers, with help from TV gardener Simon Cross.
Some of the flower tubs were tended by resident John Wilson, who has been battling a life-threatening illness.
John, 62, who has been fighting cancer and is still having chemotherapy, said he was “gutted” by the theft.
He said: “I never got a chance to water them.”
His wife Barbara, 61, who is in a wheelchair, said: “It is heartbreaking really.
“I am partially sighted but I could see the colours. It was nice, it is a shame.”
