Cutting-edge
floral design techniques courtesy of a premiere figure in
the field will be one of the highlights of "On Location,"
the Carmel-by-the-Sea Garden Club's annual Flower Show.
The event takes place Friday and Saturday at the Sunset
Center in Carmel.
Denver-based floral designer BJ Dyer, featured recently
in Florist's Review magazine, and Steven Lorton, former
writer and editor at Sunset Magazine, are the featured speakers.
There will also be flower arranging, horticulture and photography
on display during the event.
All exhibits are free to the public. The lectures takes
place at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday. Tickets for each
lecture are $25.
Lorton recently retired from a 33-year career at Sunset
Magazine, the long-time home and garden magazine, where
he started out as a garden writer and eventually became
bureau chief. He is considered one of the best garden speakers
in the nation and referred to as "Sunset's Ambassador"
when judging and lecturing to garden clubs and audiences
on the West Coast.
His talk, "My Life in Other People's Gardens,"
will cover his experiences at the magazine as well as insight
into the numerous tips he's gathered through is years as
a writer and editor.
Dyer is fresh off a recent world tour that took him to Tokyo,
Seoul, Beijing and Paris, where he explored different regional
architecture, fashion and art as well as flower shops and
designs. His treks are part of what has made his work so
popular in the world of floral design.
His talk, "The Cutting Edge of Floral Design Technique,"
is a fast-paced, exciting and fun review of the different
styles he's picked up during his travels.
"I'll talk about what's going on in Asia, Europe and
various parts of the United States," he said. "I'll
demonstrate things that are different and provide a look
that's very in and hip and now."
In the February issue of Florists' Review, two photo features
over an 11-page spread highlighted Dyer's work. He is also
scheduled to speak at the American Institute of Floral Designer's
annual international symposium in July in Chicago.
Dyer said his presentation will feature accessible designs
for any budget, using flowers that can be found anywhere.
"If someone is growing flowers in their garden locally,
these are techniques they could use as well," he said.
Whether you're a garden enthusiast or just a casual observer,
Dyer said his show will provide insight and entertainment.
