DUNMOW Town Council in co-operation with the Dunmow Society has agreed plans for a new £2500 wild flower meadow to be situated in the Chelmer Valley.
Following an assessment of the land by members of the Downs & Commons Committee a three acre site next to the river has been decided as the best option for the new meadow.
The Dunmow Society came up with the idea of turning the space into a thing of beauty said Chairman Mike Foster.
He said: "The project is something we want to really achieve by spring so that the meadow can begin to establish itself as a real beauty spot. Many people already walk around the area by the river."
Deputy town Cllr David Green agreed, saying: "The area is made up of land from the dumping and spreading of soil from a BMX track and this project would greatly enhance the town."
The position of the site has been chosen as a result of a Tarpi Report, which indicated that the land is the least fertile in the area, which makes it ideal for growing wild flowers.
Mr Green said: "Wild flowers do not like fertile soils and competition from invasive grasses, the area will have to be carefully prepared before sowing can begin in March."
It is now up to the Dunmow Society to get the project underway.
The next stage, and most important, says Mr Foster, is to apply for grants to fund the project.
Applications are being made by Dunmow Society secretary Christine Minton to various grant and fund providers including the Stansted Airport Trust.
Mr Foster said: "We would welcome any contributions from people or companies in the town towards what we consider to be a very worthwhile project."
