Feb. 3--The annual Berks-Lehigh Vegetable
and Flower Growers meeting will take place Feb. 15 at 9
a.m. in the Fleetwood Grange Hall.
John Berry, Lehigh County Cooperative Extension educator,
will present a slide show and discussion on how customers
perceive retail markets and what can be done to improve
their perception.
Breakout sessions will take place on low input vegetable
production and the Landisville variety trial review. A panel
of experienced growers will discuss adopting no-till methods
in production systems.
Bob Leiby, Lehigh County Cooperative Extension educator,
will present a travelogue on potato production in Kyrgyzstan.
Mena Hautau, Berks County Cooperative Extension educator,
will speak on preventing dermal exposure.
Complete census: Pennsylvania Farm Bureau is encouraging
farmers across the state to complete the 2007 Census of
Agriculture.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural
Statistics Service conducts the census every five years
to collect comprehensive agricultural data from every state
and county in the nation.
The census was mailed to farmers across the commonwealth
several weeks ago. The deadline to complete the forms is
Monday. Farmers can return their forms by mail or fill them
out online (www.pfb.com).
Milk output: Milk production in Pennsylvania during December
totaled 891 million pounds, up 0.2 percent from production
a year earlier, according to the Pennsylvania field office
of the National Agricultural Statistics Service.
The number of milk cows in the state during the month averaged
550,000 head, the same as November and up 1,000 head from
December 2006. Production per cow averaged 1,620 pounds
in December, 40 pounds more than November and unchanged
from December 2006.
Grain sessions: The U.S. Grains Council's fifth International
Marketing Conference and 48th annual membership meeting
will take place Feb. 9 to 13 in San Antonio.
This year's conference will be held in conjunction with
the National Sorghum Producers' and Texas Corn Producers'
annual meetings, giving participants a chance to gain insight
into the direction of feed grains exports.
Spring program: A spring knowledge refresher course will
take place Feb. 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Gro'n Sell Greenhouses,
Chalfont.
