Where flowers bloom, so does hope

LAHORE: Chief Guest Rubina Khalid Maqbool Friday said flowers are the most perfect symbol of culture, peace and love.

She was speaking at the prize distribution ceremony of Chrysanthemum Flower Arrangement competition arranged by the Flower Arrangement Society of Pakistan at Bagh-e-Jinnah Garden.

Chairman Flower Show committee Maj Col (R) Saeeduddin Qureshi, Chairman Botany Dept GCU Dr Zahiruddin, Mrs Nohin Sarfraz and Tariq Jillani were the judges of the Flower Show.

The event attracted hundreds of women from various walks of life including housewives, professionals and students, who opined the necessity of arranging such function that help revive and renew aging souls.

However, amidst all the show, unfortunately a few participants, including the first winner lost their arrangements following lack of security around the tables.

There were the dry flower arrangement and other chrysanthemum arrangements by gardeners in Bagh-e-Jinnah that acted as a magnet to attract viewers.

Housewife Mrs Noorulain told The Post that 'events like these bring in a wave of fresh air to brighten up the daily hum-drum of life.' "The natural beauty, the colours and fragrance of flowers soothe minds and ease souls," he added.

Teams from Bagh-e-Jinnah, Governor's House, Government College University, Floral Cultural Club, Crescent Model High School, New Kashmir College, Aitcheson College and Lady Maclagon Girls High School participated in the dry and fresh flower arrangement competition.

Other categories included were the corner table, central table, dinning table, free style, perfume rose, rose hybrid, rose single and double, factory gardens, hotel gardens, residential lawns professional, Ikebana-Japanese, and dry and fresh flower arrangements. Later, the chief guest distributed certificates and awards among the winners.

A member of the Flower Show Committee also announced that the Flower Show is scheduled to complete its 150 years in March 2008. "The next year's Flower Show will be arranged with the World Art Flower Association (WAFA) in Bagh-e-Jinnah to celebrate its Platinum Golden Jubilee," she added.

The special Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Chaudhry Asgher from PHA while first prizes cups and certificates were given to Millat Garden in Factory Garden category, Avari in Hotel Garden Category, Governor House in Govt Residences category, PHA, Bagh-e-Jinnah, Punjab Archaeology, Millat Tractors in various other categories, in educational category Govt College University, Aitcheson College and Sikander Mustafa in amateurs.

Special prizes of Rs 1,000 and certificates for special arrangements were given to Khalid Mehmood and Malis for 'Star and Crescent,' Abdul Ghafoor and gardener for 'Gola,' Alam Khan and gardener for 'Poinsettia' and Main Sadiq for 'Best grower'.

In Centre Table category, first prize was awarded to Vocational Technical Institute of Governor House, 2nd prize for Farah, 3rd for Mrs Syda Sajad in mature artists while among students Gulrukh and Hassan Nissar from GCU, 2nd for Israr Iqbal and 3rd for Siama and Jawad.

In the Corner Table first prize for professionals, Mrs Syda Sajad, 2nd for vocational technical institute of Governor House, 3rd for Ambreen while in students Maryam got first prize, 2nd to Madiha, Humaira and Fiaza. In Ikebana, Farah came first in professionals while in students, there was Maryam Tariq, followed by Madiha and Eraj. In 'As you like' category, students Sara and Fiaza got first prize. In 'Gardeners Baskets' presentation Haji Sadiq got first prize, Chaudhry Miraj Din came second and Muhammad Shafi third prize.
